Salvi Vivai at the “National cherry conference”, Vignola (MO), 8-9-10 June 2011

From 8-10 June 2011 Salvi Vivai will participate in the “National Cherry Conference”, a three day event organised by the DCA (Department of Fruits Tree Cultivations) of the University of Bologna taking place at La Rocca di Vignola, in the province of Modena. In addition to being a sponsor of the conference, Salvi Vivai will make their orchards available for visits and meetings where experts can have first-hand field information and additional technical inputs about the topics under discussion. At the conference, totally dedicated to cherries, the major national and international experts will present the results of the most significant research carried out in recent years concerning genetic improvement, varietal innovation and biodiversity safeguarding, new plantation systems and rain covers, disease prevention and defence, improvement of fruit quality before and after harvesting, and much more. Salvi Vivai supports and promotes modern cultivation techniques along with specific cherry varietal choices, clearly aimed at maximising production, and reducing management and harvesting costs to the minimum. This aim was achieved years ago thanks to high and very high density plantations in which the selection of dwarfing rootstock associated with valuable varieties has revolutionised cherry cultivation: harvest from the ground without recourse to platforms, consequent release from unfavourable weather, possibility to use covering systems against birds and the weather (rain and hail), better light distribution to benefit the colour and quality of the fruit, production of large, uniform cherries, nearly all above the 28 mm calibre class. Without wanting to fall in excess, we can say that the use of dwarfing rootstock, in particular GiSelA® 5, produced effects comparable to those obtained when M9 was introduced in the apple tree. As a nurseryman, Salvi Vivai believed and continues to believe in the strength of this innovation. An innovative plantation that Salvi Vivai had already presented in 2009 in Ferrara during “The High Density Cherry: the future within reach” conference, promoted by the Department of Fruits Tree Cultivations, University of Bologna, in collaboration with the Ferrara Chamber of Commerce, organising experimental field trips in the presence of numerous technicians and experts from around the world. A concrete response to the demands of modern cherry cultivation.
